A Blog to document a project based on Jan Van Eyck's painting, "Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata" with Joanne Garri and her students at Conwell-Egan Catholic High School. The project is part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Art Futures, artist in residency program.

Wow! This is pretty cool. I love the bright colors. I do have a question for the class...
Why do you think van Eyck would "hide" all of these intricate and important details by painting them so small?
And...
Has the story of St. Francis receiving the stigmata changed now that you have isolated specific parts of the painting?
If so, what's the new story? Is there a separate story for each panel? Are they parts of the old St. Francis story? Are they new stories never before told? Do the panels reflect the past, present or future?
This might be a good opportunity for a creative writing exercise.
Good job Conwell-Egan and Ben!
Yo you guys are doing some massive work out there. Ther'e's a book called "ARTiculating' about English teachers teaching their students english through studying art. The project has the students pick an artwork and for the remainder of the semester they are to write whatever comes to their mind about the work. I wonder what new things you guys are finding about van Eyck's painting, San Francis, painting and art in general by doing this painting over and over again.
Our images reflect the past- because it is Jesus and the images reflect a story that happened in the past... they reflect the future becuase we use all different colors and techniques .. They do not reflect the present because I have seen anything like this before.
What about Warhol's Last Supper series?
he did not use layers upon layers.
hey i have more pictures from that day if you want to use them.

i dunno if you want to use them but i have them so take em!
the site looks nice i like being able to look at everyone else's work.
It was not so much a criticism of Julie Mehretu as an opinion. Each indivdual brings his/her own reaction and that keeps the work alive. Dialog between painter, viewer, and the work. I don't really see that she had a strong influence.
These students have deconstructed and reconstructed a tiny painting, making obvious the details, making it their own interprtation and magnifying the beauty in Van Eyck's work
